From the Cedar Chest: Generations of Southern Quilting is an exploration of the rich tradition of quilting in our community, beginning 200 years ago and in an area spanning just 50 miles. The quilts selected represent the multiple generations of quilters, beginning as far back as the 1830s to present day, the multiple cultures living in our community, the various quilting traditions used in the area and ultimately, how these generations, cultures, and traditions come together through the beloved art of quilt making. Encompassing quilts from multiple generations, this exhibition will present quilting traditions from our rural North Florida community, borrowed from private and public collections. Many of the quilts have been completed by several family members over a period of time, as the projects have been passed down through the generations. Including antique to modern quilts, this exhibition discusses the practical, social, and special values of quilting in addition to its artistic qualities.
