The region’s rich hunting plantation tradition was carefully recorded by the former Historic Tallahassee Preservation Board of Trustees. The organization’s "LEON COUNTY HUNTING PLANTATIONS An Historical & Architectural Survey," published in 1988, explores in detail factors that culminated in the region’s rich plantation heritage.
Six of the area’s plantations have been lovingly restored and maintained, and are open to the public: Bellevue, Goodwood, Alfred B. Maclay Gardens State Park and Tall Timbers Research Station (Beadel House), in Tallahassee; and Pebble Hill and Melhana the Grand Plantation in nearby Thomasville, Georgia.
