Hiking, Biking & Running

Florida Trail

Hike on The Florida Trail, Florida’s own National Scenic Trail, stretching more than 1,400 miles across the Sunshine State. Designated by Congress in 1983, The Florida Trail is part of the National Trails System, one of only eight National Scenic Trails, and offers opportunities for short hikes or extended backpacking outings. In the Tallahassee region, The Florida Trail runs through the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge and Apalachicola National Forest. The curve of the state, where the Panhandle meets the Peninsula - the “Big Bend” – can actually be seen from dikes within the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge. In the Apalachicola National Forest, dwarf cypress forests will awe your senses and bogs of the beautiful carnivorous Pitcher Plants dot the landscape.

This trail is the first of its kind in Leon County and is a pristine addition to the already commendable park system present in Tallahassee. This trail was made possible by the coordinated efforts of the Leon County Parks Recreation, FSU, and Gulf Winds Track Club. The Gulf Winds Track Club at FSU provided funding for the creation of the course. The trail was designed to give runners the opportunity to run on several types of surfaces. When the trail is not being used for a running event, it is open to the general public for hiking, running, and biking. The course will be used not only for local races but also for district and regional school races. Directions to Park The park is located at 7550 Apalachee Parkway, about four-and-a-half miles east of US-319 on US-27.
