Hunting
The Tallahassee region is blessed with so many diverse natural assets that provide outdoor enthusiasts with countless outdoor activities and hunting is certainly one that provides both variety and challenge. This area is unique in that it provides sportsmen opportunities to hunt a wide array of quarry: from big game like deer and hogs, coyotes and bobcat; to ducks, dove, quail and turkey; and even small game like squirrels and rabbit. If you can legally hunt it in Florida, you can hunt it in North Florida. Clearly, no other part of the state offers the quality and diversity in both game and the hunting experience itself that this region of North Florida provides.
This area is also fortunate to have many public land options for hunting, including the Apalachicola National Forest, Florida’s largest national forest, protecting more than 571,088 acres and the Joe Budd Wildlife Management Area (WMA), which is one of the few places in the state where only primitive weapons—bows and muzzleloaders—are permitted for hunting.
Aucilla Wildlife Management Area (WMA) (http://www.myfwc.com/docs/Brochures/09-10_Aucilla.pdf ), where two rivers offer an abundance of recreational opportunities and the extensive river floodplains provide excellent food and cover for deer and other wildlife.
The Ochlockonee River WMA (http://www.myfwc.com/docs/Brochures/09-10_OchlockoneeRiver.pdf) , part of the 16,896-acre Lake Talquin State Forest (850-488-1871, www.fl-dof.com/state_forests/lake_talquin.html) , offers some of the most diverse hunting, with everything from deer, turkey, rabbit, hogs, coyote, bobcat, quail, migratory birds, and more.
Whether hunting on your own, with a guide service or lodge, on public land or private land, or whether you prefer to hunt with a bow or a rifle, the Tallahassee area provides the opportunities to pursue the game you want, the way you want, all the while being surrounded by the natural Florida settings that come from the rolling red hills and the deep forests of North Florida.
