FSU Department of Dance To Present awaken and shift
Florida State University and Masters of Fine Arts candidates, Emily Mlot and Kathleen Wessel will present awaken and shift, a dance concert celebrating creative exploration. awaken and shift will be held February 23 & 24, 2007 at 8:00 pm in the Nancy Smith Fichter Dance Theatre in Montgomery Hall.
awaken and shift is choreographically complex and musically diverse with sound selections ranging from the lively twangs of On Banjo Jamboree to the intricate rhythms of John Adams’ Shaking and Trembling. Visiting Professor of Dance and guest choreographer, Gerri Houlihan, offers the energetic Dansque, a solo for Mlot, set to the music of the Latin American Quartet. Guest choreographer George Staib and composer Kendall Simpson of Emory University collaborate on the mysterious Stealth Disturbance danced by Wessel. Florida State graduate student and eccentric choreographer, Andrew Noble presents the clever On the Lanai with Lewis, a duet danced by Mlot and Wessel.
The concert will open with Mlot’s Sift, an exciting and dynamic new work for six dancers. Also included in the program are Mlot’s introspective and intriguing An Interlude Subsided and Wessel’s powerful and athletic Glacial Ornaments. Both works premiered at the 2006 Days of Dance and have been chosen to represent Florida State’s Department of Dance at the upcoming American College Dance Festival in Oxford, Mississippi. awaken and shift will also feature a restaged version of Wessel’s awake in the rest, which premiered in the 2005 Days of Dance.
The concert is in partial fulfillment of the Masters of Fine Arts degree in dance.
Awaken and shift will be held February 23 and 24, 2007 at 8:00 pm. Tickets are $6.00 for general admission and free for FSU students with valid ID. Tickets may be purchased through the Fine Arts Ticket Office by calling 850-644-6500 or online.
