Visit Tallahassee Announces Big Bend Freedom Fest and a Reason to Cheer This Fourth of July 2010

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.  – June 14, 2010 – Visitors to Florida’s Capital City celebrate their freedom in style this Fourth of July weekend with Tallahassee’s Big Bend Freedom Fest. From the First Friday Gallery Hop and “Salute the Military” Downtown GetDown block party to the Big Bend Blues and Barbeque Festival and live concerts and fireworks at Tom Brown Park, Tallahassee packages a traditional red, white and blue Fourth of July for visitors to enjoy a patriotic weekend. Visitors kick-off the holiday weekend on Friday, July 2, with COCA’s Citywide First Friday Gallery Hop where art lovers enjoy an evening jaunt through Tallahassee’s finest and funkiest art galleries. The most popular Gallery Hop destination is Railroad Square Art Park, the crown jewel of the recently revitalized Arts District and home to more than 50 studios, galleries and small shops. Afterwards, visitors and locals alike head to celebrate the holiday weekend at the Capital City Bank Downtown GetDown where College Avenue and Adams Street turn into a lively street party full of food, drinks, live music, children’s entertainment and community stage performances. Presented by United Way of the Big Bend, the “Salute the Military” themed Downtown GetDown features live music on the main stage by the regional group, The River and a vehicle and military exhibit including a Vietnam Era UH1-B “Huey” Helicopter and hands-on history experiences.

On Saturday, July 3, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., visitors sway to the sound of the blues while enjoying smoked barbeque as King Cotton, Rick Lollar, the Swingin’ Harpoon Blues Band and TJ and The Burglar Group take center stage at Kleman Plaza located in the heart of downtown Tallahassee. Fireworks burst into the open sky on Sunday, July 4, at Tom Brown Park, while families and friends listen to live concerts by The Billy Rigsby Band, JB’s Zydeco Zoo, Eric Durrance and King Cotton. In addition to the live entertainment, other activities in the park include a Naturalization Ceremony, arts and crafts, food vendors, pony rides and a children’s activity area featuring games, inflatables, water slides and a children’s entertainment stage.
