Mother Nature is putting on a spring show along our area rivers these days, and the Sopchoppy River is one of the best showcases for wildflowers. A great profusion of wild azaleas bloom along the shorelines, some with almost pure white blossoms and others revealing a deep pink. They smell like honeysuckle, much sweeter than the non-native azaleas seen in landscaped environments.

Visit Tallahassee, along with the Wakulla County Tourist Development Council, announce ?Conquistadors in the Fabled Land of the Apalachee,? a four-part educational outreach to encourage residents to discover Spanish Colonial Heritage in Florida?s Capital Region and learn about the VIVA FLORIDA 500 initiative. The year 2013 will mark the 500th anniversary of Conquistador Ponce de Leon?s arrival and exploration in Florida. ?Conquistadors in the Fabled Land of the Apalachee? is just one of many efforts now underway to commemorate this momentous event. Each one-hour presentation opens with an introduction to ?connect the dots? of Spanish Colonial events and sites to Apalachee historic sites. Local historian Madeleine H. Carr, Ph.D. will moderate all discussions and provide a brief orientation of the historic significance of the area. Each event includes prominent archaeologists and historians who will discuss the varied aspects of European contact at specific sites.
2012-2013 Special Event Grant Applications Now Available

Applications for the Special Event Grant program administered by the Leon County Tourist Development Council will be available on May 21, 2012. A workshop will be held for sporting events, and general and cultural events at the Leon County Courthouse – 5th Floor Commission Chambers on June 6, 2012 beginning at 3:00 pm. The purpose of the workshop is to familiarize applicants with the new policies that have been adopted by the Tourist Development Council. The Special Event Grant Program is designated to promote Tallahassee-Leon County as a preferred visitor destination.

Tallahassee, FL ? October 18, 2011 The Tallahassee Bach Parley will begin the 2011-2012 season with J.S. Bach?s beautiful and popular Brandenburg Concerto No. 4, and will also feature the Telemann ?Paris? Quartet in E minor and two vocal works by Handel. Tallahassee Bach Parley concerts are unique to our area because the musicians use period instruments—both antique instruments from the 18th century and modern reproductions—that give the audience a glimpse into the past. By using the same models of instruments that Bach, Handel and Telemann would have used themselves, Bach Parley concertgoers will hear Baroque music performed as it might have sounded when composed over 300 years ago. ?Parley? means discussion in French, so true to the spirit of the Bach Parley name, music director Valerie Arsenault will offer commentary before each piece to help the audience to understand what to listen for in the music, providing background for listeners new to Baroque music and offering musical and historical insights to experienced Baroque fans as well. The concert will be held at 3 PM, Sunday November 13, at St. John?s Episcopal Church, 211 North Monroe Street in Tallahassee.

Tallahassee, FL, September 7, 2011: While Florida?s Historic Capitol dome is undergoing some much?needed repairs, plans are underway for the use of the old copper once it is removed. Soon, you, too, will have a chance to purchase a piece of Florida history and aid in the continued preservation of this significant historic treasure. After more than a century of leaking and attempts at repair, the old copper will be removed, then the dome will be re sealed with new copper and preservation?sensitive sealants. As the scaffolding rises overhead, the Museum development staff is investigating ways that the copper can be fashioned into collectors? items for fundraising purposes. Commemorative coins, collectible ornaments, and a donor wall of recognition are just a few of the plans.
