Birding Spots in Tallahassee Florida

The Great Florida Birding Trail
(Panhandle Section-Leon County)

The Great Florida Birding Trail program is handled at the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission with the support of the Florida Department of Transportation and the Wildlife Foundation of Florida.  This trail is a 2,000 mile highway trail connecting 446 great birding sites throughout Florida. It is divided into four sections: East Florida, Panhandle Florida, West Florida, and South Florida.  The Panhandle Florida Section opened in May 2004 including 78 sites throughout 16 counties.  The sites below are located in the Tallahassee area.

Southside of Tallahassee

  • Black Gum Swamp Nature Preserve

Directions from the State Capitol: Go south 1.8 miles on South Monroe Street.  Turn right on Orange Avenue.  Go 2.1 miles and turn left onto an unmarked road running to the left of a small brick building.  Parking is available on the southeast of the station.

Directions from the State Capitol: Go east on US 27, Apalachee Parkway for 3.3 miles.  Take a right on Capital Circle SE.  Go approximately 2 miles and take a left on Blair Stone Road.  Veer to your right on Four Oaks Boulevard and take a left on Mulberry Park Drive.  A little ways up the road take a left on Grove Park Drive.  Parking is available at the Gulf Club or the Community Center.

  • Robert White Williams Birding Trail

Directions from the State Capitol: Go south 1.8 miles on South Monroe Street.  Turn right on Orange Avenue.  Go 1.3 miles, cross Springhill Road and then a small bridge.  Right after the bridge, turn left into an unpaved open area next to the creek.  Parking is available on the grass.

  • Thomas P. Smith Water Reclamation Facility
    (Springhill Road Sewage Treatment plant)

Directions from the State Capitol:  Go south 1.8 miles on South Monroe Street.  Turn right on Orange Avenue. Go 1.4 miles and turn left on Springhill Road.  Look for the sign on the left marked “City of Tallahassee Water Quality Division” and turn left into the facility parking area.  Enter the building and sign in at the front desk. 

  • Southeast Farm Wastewater Reuse Facility
    (Tram Road Sewage Treatment plant)

Directions from the State Capitol: Go south 2.5 miles on South Monroe Street.  Turn left on Tram Road, CR 259.  Go 2.8 miles and turn right into the facility’s gate.  Parking is available at the first building on the left.

Directions from the State Capitol:  Go south on South Monroe Street and turn right on West Gaines Street.  Go approximately 1.2 miles and turn left on Lake Bradford Road.  Pass Pineview Elementary School and take a right to stay on Lake Bradford Road. At the stop sign, take a right onto West Orange Avenue. Go approximately 2 miles and turn left on Rankin Avenue.  Museum is located at the end of the road.
