Whether on one of our guided walking or driving tours, our guides will share with you and your group many of the fascinating stories of Florida’s capital and the Forgotten Coast including its diverse people, events, architecture, and historic and alleged haunted places. Incorporate our tours as an activity for your students, clubs, meeting attendees,VIPs, family guests and family reunions. Guided walking tours are especially nice at sunset for diners in our charming downtown. Amusing ghost tours (based upon actual events) are held annually in October and are offered year-round as pre-formed group tours (prices vary). Navigating New Worlds

The Florida Historic Capitol Museum is hosting an exclusive exhibition as part of the statewide Viva Florida 500 commemoration of Ponce de Leon’s landing in Florida and the following five hundred years of historical transitions. Navigating New Worlds: Identity, Perception, and Politics in Florida will highlight rare and important maps and prints from the Michael W. and Dr. Linda M. Fisher. The exhibit highlights rare and historically important pieces from the collection, such as the unusual double-sided Secunda etas Mundi map from 1493 (see image). Visitors will explore the ties between outsiders’ perceptions of Florida, experiences of those living in the region, and how these interactions shaped Florida’s settlement. Through historical interpretation based on scholarly research and document translations, the maps on display will depict Europeans’ influence on the future shape of Florida and reflect the continuity of various cultures and languages throughout the transformation of Florida’s political landscape into the Florida that we know today. Mapmaking tools, audiovisual content, and other 3-D objects will enhance the visitor experience. The exhibition, which opens on January 17, 2013 and runs thru December 31, 2013, will also be complemented by a series of educational programs and special events.
Anne Mergen: Florida Cartoons

The Florida Historic Capitol Museum is pleased to host Anne Mergen: Florida Cartoons. This temporary traveling exhibit features the work of editorial cartoonist Anne Mergen. Her coverage of both political and social issues affecting the citizens of Florida quickly gained her the respect of colleagues and the patronage of loyal readers. Gowns of Goodwood: The Art of Dressing

The special exhibit will display dresses and dressing table accessories from the ladies who lived in the mansion from the 1830s to 1930. Jointly curated by Goodwood and Florida State University’s Department of Retail, Merchandising, and Product Development, the exhibit will depict different eras of the plantation's history from its antebellum origins as a corn and cotton plantation through the Great Depression. Admission to the exhibit is included in the cost of the Main House Tour. Open: Tues.-Fri.: 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and Sat.: 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
Seminole People of Florida: Survival and Success

Seminole People of Florida: Survival and Success will be on display May 17 to August 18, 2013, at the Museum of Florida History admission and exhibit admission are free. The Museum of Florida History worked with members of the Seminole Tribe, the Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum, and other advisors to provide insight into the rich Seminole history, culture, and artistic traditions from the mid–1850s to the present. More than ninety artifacts are featured, including several examples of patchwork clothing from the Museum’s collection of Seminole artifacts. Hours: Monday-Friday: 9:00am–4:30pm Saturday: 10:00am–4:30pm Sunday and holidays: Noon–4:30pm

Historian Anthony Dixon presents “The Black Seminoles.” Many slaves escaped to join the Native American tribes throughout Florida. Dr. Dixon explores their origins and impact on Seminole culture. This lecture is part of the programing for the Museum’s temporary exhibit, Seminole People of Florida: Survival and Success.
Movie Premiere of The French in Florida (1562-66)

Join us for the Tallahassee premiere of a digitally animated short film based on the historic Jacques LeMoyne and Theodor de Bry engravings of early Florida! The film, produced by the UF Digital Worlds Institute for the George A. Smathers Library with assistance from the France-Florida Research Institute, is narrated by renowned Florida historian Dr. Michael Gannon. During the premiere and program at 6:15 p.m., James Oliverio, Executive Director of DWI, will describe the development of the project and the digitization process and historical archaeologist and Theodor de Bry descendant Dr. John de Bry will provide context for these iconic engravings. A string quartet from the University of Florida will play the film score live during both showings.

Participants will learn basic fire and hammer techiniques and will create a piece to take home. your own masterpiece and leave tired and inspired. Join the Historic Capitol Museum for lunch to discuss the process of developing a political cartoon. Editorial Board panelists will include former Editor of the Tallahassee Democrat, Commissioner Mary Ann Lindley, Bill Cotterell of the Tallahassee Democrat, and Andy Marlette, Editorial Cartoonist from the Pensacola News Journal. You can bring a lunch or reserve a box lunch by calling the Historic Capitol at 850-487-1902. Box lunches are $5 for museum members and $10 for non-members.

This month the program is related to our exhibit, Seminole People of Florida: Survival and Success. The Seminole people are known for their vibrant patchwork clothing. Museum staff will discuss the patchwork clothing and lead participants in creating their own patchwork bookmarks.

Archaeology Day

Organizations throughout the panhandle are teaming up for a fun-filled day of activities to educate the public about archaeological and historical resources at the Panhandle Pioneer Settlement. Archaeologists will be on-hand to provide general information about archaeology, historic preservation, and heritage tourism, as well as identify artifacts from the public’s personal collections.This event is free and open to the public! The program also includes hands-on safety training and background information about daily military life in the Mission San Luis village. Ages 16 and up. Giving Thanks: 17th-Century Apalachee & Spanish Foodways

See demonstrations of traditional food preparation by historical interpreters in period dress. Visitors can observe outdoor cooking with native and European plants from the site's gardens and fields. There will be demonstrations of meat and fish smoking on the barbacoa as well as activities for children. Learn how people and foods from the New and Old Worlds came together to create a cross-cultural cuisine.
