Moses in his Day: Harry T. Moore and Florida's Struggle for Civil Rights

The Taylor House Museum will be hosting an exhibit to commemorate the life of America's first civil right martyr, Harry T. Moore. Moore was killed instantly on Christmas Eve, 1951, when a bomb planted by members of the Ku Klux Klan, exploded under his Mims, Florida home. His wife Harriette died nine days later. December 24 will mark the 60th anniversary of Moore's death. MUSEUM IS OPEN THREE DAYS PER WEEK ON TUESDAY, THURSDAY AND SATURDAY.

Girl Scouting in the Sunshine State: Celebrating 100 Years

The Girl Scout Council of the Florida Panhandle (GSCFP) and the Florida Historic Capitol Museum announce the opening of "Girl Scouting in the Sunshine State: Celebrating 100 Years" on January 12, 2012 at 6:00 p.m. The exhibit, which runs through August 5, 2012, celebrates the 100th Anniversary of Girl Scouts in Florida and demonstrates the important relationship between Girl Scouts and Florida’s state and local governments. The exhibit features historic Girl Scout uniforms, handbooks, badges, photographs, newspaper articles, and camping gear from all across the state of Florida representing the seven regional Girl Scout Councils. The exhibit was co-produced by a team of Girl Scouts with 15 members along with a committee of adult Girl Scout volunteers and leaders. There will be special events coordinated with the exhibit from its opening until its closing in August. Highwaymen Art Presentation

The Museum will receive a new Highwaymen painting from the Museum Foundation on February 7 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The painting, "Royal Poinciana Tree" by George Buckner will be added to the collection and go on exhibit in the Museum gallery.

3-day outdoor festival highlighting, showcasing, and celebrating local & national African-American History. Where better to showcase it than outdoors in the beautiful, historic, coastal town of Apalachicola! Festival is the flagship event of a month-long celebration of African-American History brought to you by the Hillside Coalition of Laborers for Apalachicola (H'COLA) and the City of Apalachicola. The festival features a parade, vendor booths, food booths, arts, crafts, children's activities, games, music for all ages. Saturday features live entertainment all day long with the headliners, Hulon Crayton & The On Call Band at 8pm. Sunday features outdoor worship in the park. Admission is FREE!

One Woman's Style: The Decorative Arts at the Knott House Museum

William and Luella Knott purchased their final home in 1928. Mrs. Knott furnished it in the Victorian style of her youth. Professor Karen Myers, FSU Department of Interior Design, will enlighten participants about Gilded Age interiors and how that style was broadly interpreted in the Knott House. Educator Julie Pounder will describe how Mrs. Knott's frugal use of materials to furnish her home fit into common decorative trends of the 1930s. Refreshments will follow the presentation. Free of charge.

Emancipation Day

May 20, 2012

After the Civil War, Union General Edward Moody McCook used as his headquarters the building now known as the Knott House Museum. On May 20, 1865, he announced the Emancipation Proclamation. The Knott House annually commemorates the freeing of slaves in Florida with a reading, period music, and a picnic in Lewis Park. Sponsored by City of Tallahassee; Hopping, Green, and Sams, P.A.; Po’ Boys Creole Café; and the Tallahassee Downtown Improvement Authority. Free of charge.
