Florida Trend magazine confirms what Tallahassee diners already know: Tallahassee has some of the best restaurants in Florida.
Five Tallahassee restaurants are among those recognized this year with Florida Trend Golden Spoon Awards. The magazine annually issues Golden Spoons to restaurants it considers the best in the state.
The Blu Halo joins the ranks of Cypress, Food Glorious Food, Masa and Shula’s 347 Grill for Tallahassee’s 2017-2018 winners.
The Blu Halo was named one of the 23 best new dining establishments in the state. This upscale steakhouse offers seafood, unique martinis and thick steaks with southern specialties such as truffle mac and cheese and charred cream corn. The restaurant is also popular for brunch and dessert, featuring wine sorbet and nitrogen ice cream cocktails.
Cypress Restaurant is a consistent winner and is listed among 48 restaurants in the Golden Spoon Hall of Fame. Florida Trend raves about its “new appreciation for the Old South,” its use of local produce, game and seafood and its creative use of ingredients such as sugar cane, fennel, okra and goat cheese.
Food Glorious Food serves artfully prepared American fusion cuisine that celebrates Southern classics such as collards, cheese grits, seafood and Andouille sausage. The menu includes petite filet mignon, spiced duck breast, caramelized salmon, pan-fried grouper and an extensive dessert menu.
Masa is a modern venture in Asian fusion skillfully executed by Tallahassee’s Lucy Ho, who arrived in the capital almost 50 years ago as a professor’s wife and was the city’s first Chinese cooking teacher. Masa offerings include lettuce rolls, sashimi, tempura, pad Thai, curried duck breast, lamb chops, seafood and beef tenderloin tips.
Shula’s 347 Grill provides fine dining downtown in the historic Hotel Duval. Says Florida Trend: “No better place for Florida power-dining than in the shadow of Don Shula and Bob Graham, with big steaks in the forefront.” Shula steaks are from Graham cattle. The restaurant also serves seafood, a bleu cheese burger from a signature Black Angus grind, and top shelf wines and cocktails.
