Zacadoo’s Grille in Tallahassee

Zacadoo's Grille is a franchise that originated in Valdosta, GA, and has made its first out-of-state appearance right here in Tallahassee. Zacadoo's opened late last year on Appalachee Parkway, right next to the La Quinta Inn and across from the SunTrust bank.

When I first saw the building I was intrigued by the name and curious lack of windows. The building is a tan structure with no obvious entrance or exit. I had wondered if the place was one of those futuristic restaurants that were completely run by machines. That would explain the lack of windows and doors since robots don't need a view to produce quality and timely service.

Before checking it out myself, I had to look it up on all the leading restaurant rating boards. Urbanspoon had given it fairly favorable reviews with some scathing remarks. Yelp was more of the same. Some people really had a problem with the drive-through only system. I personally think it makes the most sense since I don't really like dining in at fast food restaurants because the only times I generally get fast food is if I'm on the way somewhere.

After weeks of passing by Zacadoo's, I finally tried it out with my brother while we were on the way back to my place from Best Buy. The neon scrolling sign out in the front called to me with a sirens song of chicken tender boxes, 99 cent hot dogs, and 59 cent ice cream cones. I couldn't rationalize passing that up so a pit stop was unavoidable.

We ordered a chicken tender box and a couple of burgers to get an idea of what this place was about.

In the burger department, Zacadoo's is definitely a cut above McDonalds. Their steak burgers are more juicy and definitely have more flavor but they don't quite measure up to any of the real burger places in town. I'd rank Zacadoo's a little above the popular fast food burger chains like McDonalds and Burger King, but they aren't quite in the same league as Five Guys.

As for the tenders, they stand up to other chicken tender joints like Chubby's, Zaxby's and Chick Fil A. For less than 6 bucks you can get a chicken tender dinner box that comes with fries and texas toast. . The tenders come with Zacadoo's signature sauce that can easily be put on anything to transform it from merely edible to absolutely delectable.

Despite the odd exterior and the polarizing online reviews, I recommend trying Zacadoo's Grille. Not only because it has some pretty good food, but the staff is friendly and very accommodating. During my last time there, the woman working the window had pleasantly informed me that there would be a little bit of a wait for my food. Before I had a chance to process any sense of disappointment, she offered me something to sip on while they prepared the food. Since I hadn't ordered a drink, the idea of a free soda quelled whatever issue I had with the wait.

Low prices and good food bring people to the door, but great service really keeps people coming back. I know that I'll be back. Maybe next time to try out their breakfast menu.
