This weekend, June 2nd, the North Florida Brewers League (NFBL) and the Tallahassee Animal Shelter Foundation (ASF) are teaming up for a day of local brews and adorable furry creatures. This wonderful union of craft beer and furry companions is something that I have been looking forward to for quite some time. Last year was a blast and I imagine this year will be better.
Pints for Paws is an annual fundraiser that promotes Tallahassee's animal shelters and showcases some of Florida's great home brewers. Last year, volunteers from the local animal shelters were sprinkled throughout the crowd and brought with them some of the animals that were benefiting from the afternoon.
The presence of wagging tails and interesting beers is something that I love about this event. The variety of beers by the local brewers had everything from the conventional crisp lagers to the conceivably outlandish ales. I've had many different fruity beers and ones that have other interesting ingredients but I've never had bacon flavored beer before.
On paper, bacon and beer seemed like a great idea to bring together. If you consider their high levels of deliciousness and their inherent manliness, I can't imagine a more holy union. However, as mere mortals, some things should never be tinkered with. I personally didn't enjoy it but I never witnessed any outright distaste for it. I imagine that the batch was simply an early embodiment of a long line of fine tunings and I eagerly await its arrival this year.
The event starts around 4pm under the Market Square Pavilion on Timberlane. It'll initially run about $10 for the entrance fee and the first six drink tickets. However, for an additional $10 you can get 12 more tickets, which for all intents and purposes is the best route to take. At last year's event, NFBL brewers donated around 300 gallons of home brewed beer, and the funds raised helped improve the lives of numerous dogs, cats, rabbits and other animals in the care of the Tallahassee Animal Service Center. So that means more beers to sample and more good to be gained.
It's obviously a 21 and up event so I wouldn't bring the kids unless you can keep them entertained over at Lofty Pursuits while you sample the best brews of Florida.
