Monticello Watermelon Festival
I DO love the South. There's always a festival devoted entirely to what has made a town famous. Monticello is known for its amazing watermelons and has been celebrating them for 62 years now with their Watermelon Festival. The festivities begin on June 8th, but the main events are during the weekend of the 15th and 16th, so check their website for the complete schedule www.monticellojeffersonfl.com/wmfschedule.cfm.
Most events are free, and you won't want to miss any of them. Begin your Friday night by shopping for arts & crafts, dancing in the street, eating fantastic BBQ, entering a watermelon seed spitting contest, and end it with a ghost tour sponsored by The Chamber of Commerce. Be sure not to stay out so late you aren't up early enough on Saturday for lots more fun, including the Melon Run, BIG parade, and of course, all the watermelon your heart desires!

Rebecca Harrell
Cultural Expert
Rebecca Harrell chose to make Tallahassee her home over twenty years ago after earning a degree in Advertising/Graphic Design from The University of Alabama. She started her career in graphics, but soon discovered painting was her true passion, and opened a retail shop in Betton Place to sell her art. As a professional artist, she has licensed her designs to companies for all types of products for more than 15 years. In order to work from home, while her kids were small, she started and still maintains a website dedicated to selling her work. She is an active community volunteer, and along with her husband, Tallahassee native Kye Harrell, is a busy parent of two teenage boys. Rebecca also produces and maintains an entertaining blog for local tabletop & fine gift store My Favorite Things. When she isn't painting, cooking, eating or writing about them all, you'll find her driving all across the Southeast to watch her kids compete in crew regattas for Tallahassee's team, Capital City Rowing.
