Around the World with FSU's Flying High Circus

FSU students performing a balancing act at the Florida State University Flying High Circus in Tallahassee, FloridaAre you aware that one of the only two collegiate circuses in the United States is located on Florida State's campus...right in our own backyard?  The program began sixty-five years ago by Jack Haskin as an extracurricular activity, designed to integrate men and women at the newly co-ed institution, and is still presenting spellbinding performances rivaling professional circus troupes today!  The FSU Circus has no animal acts, but does offer three rings of fabulous entertainment for all ages, with an amazing aerial and stage presentation, all performed by Florida State students.

Each April, the Circus generates revenue by hosting a series of "Homeshow" performances under its own big top tent on the FSU campus.  If you miss one of these special shows, you just might have to travel to see them, as the students have been known to perform in cities all across the globe at other times during the year.  If you're an FSU student, not only are you eligible to join and actually perform, but your ticket is free!  Visit http://circus.fsu.edu/index.html  for more information or to purchase tickets.

 Rebecca Harrell
Cultural Expert

Rebecca Harrell chose to make Tallahassee her home over twenty years ago after earning a degree in Advertising/Graphic Design from The University of Alabama.  She started her career in graphics, but soon discovered painting was her true passion, and opened a retail shop in Betton Place to sell her art.   As a professional artist, she has licensed her designs to companies for all types of products for more than 15 years.  In order to work from home, while her kids were small, she started and still maintains a website dedicated to selling her work.  She is an active community volunteer, and along with her husband, Tallahassee native Kye Harrell, is a busy parent of two teenage boys.  Rebecca also produces and maintains an entertaining blog for local tabletop & fine gift store My Favorite Things.  When she isn't painting, cooking, eating or writing about them all, you'll find her driving all across the Southeast to watch her kids compete in crew regattas for Tallahassee's team, Capital City Rowing.
